Lions Hire D-Coordinator Donnie Henderson, lose out on Coaches Barry and Mularkey

The Lions have hired former Jets Defensive Coordinator Donnie Henderson for the same position on their coaching staff. Henderson, who has worked with Marinelli before in Tampa, had been a head coaching candidate until the Jets imploded this season. Henderson is also an adherent to the Dungy-style Tampa Cover-2 Defensive scheme. I am quite curious who will potentially unfold as the Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach. These are going to be very important hires for Marinelli.

Marinelli’s son-in-law, Joe Barry, is the Tampa Linebackers coach. It is believed that the Lions were denied access to Barry, whom Marinelli would have liked to have been hired for the Defensive Coordinator’s job. Also, the Miami Dolphins were able to hire Mike Mularkey as their Offensive Coordinator prior to the Lions having an opportunity to do so.

Things are moving fast, Dick Jauron becomes a Head Coach in Buffalo. Greg (former Lions QB Coach/Coordinator) Olson is the new Rams Offensive Coordinator. I do know one thing, if Jauron is able to achieve more success than Marinelli, the pissing and moaning many fans have expressed over the years for the Lions not hiring Gary Moeller will seem minute compared to the vitriol that would likely be expressed over Matt Millen’s failure to make the right coaching hire this time. At this point, I am very optimistic that Marinelli can be a difference-maker and successful Head Coach.

  1. i jus want to say that our new catch phrase in detroit should be in marinelli we trust cause i think finally someone has helped millen get his head on straight and mak e very smart decision concernig the franchise of the detroit lions I believe you will find that marinelli like most of the great coaches poseesses discippline integrity and will hold players accountable, you will see a much different detroit lions team take the field in august more disciplined more focused and a heck of alot more aggressiveespecially with the moves i believ marinelli is about to make in the free agent market and in the draft look for present wide recievers to stretch the field and score decisively as well as a smothering defense that will hold opponents to more three and outs then they themselves will have a defense that will create more turnovers then the offense does and watch for harrington to finally give what is expected of himcause he will finally be given the trust and respect of his coaching staff and teammates marineli will weed out some rotten apples of course who they will be will surprise you just know that roy williams and company will definately be the newest superstar reciving core……………….nuff said

  2. Just remember, this is still the Lions. One Coaches reputation has been marred permanently (Mariucci) and others (Ross) appeared on the verge of breakdown. We were sold a bill of goods upon the arrival of Marty and Matt (Friggin Motorcycles and Goatees, sheesh!). This organization and the local media have a way of driving our hopes up (even with vocal opponents like Rob Parker and Drew Sharp) too high. Let’s hope Marinelli proves capable and the Lion’s players respond to his firm guidance.
