“Stone Hands” Mike Williams Dashes Remaining Chance for Salvaging the 2006 Season

December 27, 2006 on 11:52 am | In Uncategorized |

When Mike Williams was drafted, 10th overall in 2005, he was expected to be a little rusty, since he had missed an entire collegiate season after an aborted attempt to make an early entry into the NFL for the 2004 draft.  Williams was expected to use his long body, athleticism, comparative largesse, and excellent hands as an inside receiver who would move the chains and would pose an unmatched threat inside of the red zone.

Instead, he has been late or missed practices and team meetings, battled weight management issues, had his work ethic repeatedly questioned and failed to seize every opportunity that he has been given to succeed.   In spite of what he purportedly has to offer to the organization, and the gross sum of money he is being paid to offer those services, Williams has been a colossal disappointment. Williams had a major chance for redemption on Sunday, in what could have been a defining moment for the entire beleaguered Lions organization.   Instead, he dropped the ball, literally and figuratively.

Williams’ failure, if the Lions had not already weathered the failing of Qb Joey Harrington and WR Charles Rogers, would stand as among the worst the worst ever by any NFL player.   Williams will likely be given one more chance to return to Detroit next season.   Unless he makes a major turnaround, he will likely will never be given a better opportunity for success, than the one he was given on Sunday, against the NFC’s best team and Lions divisional foe, the Bears.    Taking that thought one step further, the Lions can ill afford to have the patience or optimism to expect any more than they have already received from Williams.

The Lions have one merciful game remaining left to play in their 2006 season.  The Lions seem to have a firm grip on the overall first draft pick in the 2007 draft.   Hopefully, the organization can learn from it’s collective failures, and draft the cornerstone player necessary to begin their arduous march back towards NFL respectability.   At one time, the Lions thought they may have made that selection in a gifted, young wide receiver from USC.  The continued failings of Williams should serve as a reminder how difficult it to truly is to make that giant step in becoming a professional athlete and how costly a misstep in that process can be to a professional franchise.

  2. this honestly doesn’t have anything to do with Mike williams but more of the upcoming draft. Now i know it is still a little while away but people keep talking about getting brady quinn as the lions first pick. I honestly think the first thing we need to do is grab joe thomas, the offensive lineman for wisconsin, then 2nd round pick up a left over qb, or maybe….if any possibility trade a 2nd and 3rd for another 1. but the first thing to do is get matt millan out! for any other bloggers out there who agree or disagrre let me now. have a great new year. Peace.

  4. Picking Brady Quinn would be a typicly bad Lions pick. We need some core players people! Matt Millen though has assured us another losing season. I am not sure if this is the appropriate blog as I am unaware if it is pro-ownership or not. However I thought I would share this letter that I sent to the Lions. Please read below:

Wow, I had always thought that the Detroit Lions were ran with a certain ineptitude that would make even the dumbest of people appear highly intelligent. With your announcement of the retention of that sack of shit of a GM, you have assured another piss poor losing season.

I want everyone at the Detroit Lions, aside from the poor head coach and players, to know that I look on all of you with the deepest animosity. You are, to put it as lightly as possible, A BUNCH OF FUCKING IDIOTS! YOU MAKE THE WORST DRAFT/PERSONNEL DECISIONS I HAVE EVER SEEN! You assholes make Al Davis look like a genius. I promise TO NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD, SO LONG AS I LIVE! I hope that piece of shit GM burns in hell for what he has done to the Lions, and you along with him!

I also blame all of you suck asses for the retirement of Barry Sanders. I am musing the idea of starting a boycott of all games of the 07 season as our way of civil disobedience. Never have I seen a pro sports franchise more disconnected from its fans. You have all done a wonderful job of instilling hate, despair and mediocrity!

On behalf of one pissed off fan of the Lions, BRAVO, you have managed to align everyone against you.

FIRE MATT MILLEN, RIGHT FUCKING NOW, OR FACE A BOYCOTT!

    FUCK ALL OF YOU,

    Lions fan

P.S. I make no apologies for penning such a ridiculous letter. I felt it was the only way to get through to people of your depraved integrity and nonexistent intelligence. You are no better than a despot ruling some far away country! REGIME CHANGE IN DETROIT IS A MUST, REST ASSURED I AINT FUCKING GOING NOWHERE! YOU THOUGHT THE FANS BEING SILENT WAS A SHOCK! WAIT TILL NOBODY FUCKING SHOWS UP!

  5. Hey LC! Who are you man? I have been silent about the Lions so I am not sure who the preeminent blogger of the Lions is. I would love to get in touch with that person as I am planning a boycott of the 2007 season. The boycott will not be a reflection of our feelings for the players on the team but the organization itself. Something must be done about Matt Millen. I for one thought Mariucci was a great coach and failed because of Mr. Millen. WHO IS BEHIND ON THE BOYCOTT IDEA? Feel free to email me anytime, Steinsac@yahoo.com
Let’s do something to save our Lions people!

  6. Seth, i admire your enthusiasm, I do not admire your use of coarse language to get your point across. i too am a disalusioned fan of the detroit lions, and mighty upset. By using your method of degrading you lose your punch. Food for thought: Keep it above the belt, dont lower yourself to rediculous language to make a point, that way, my kids who also read these blogs can continue to monitor them along with us! Darin
