Marinelli Vs. The Media

October 8, 2007 on 7:05 pm | In Uncategorized |

“Killer” Kowalski is reporting that their were some exploding tensions at today’s Lions press conference.  Rod Marinelli has been contentious when asked difficult questions during his Monday press conferences after two out of the last three games, both horrible road losses.

I respect Rod Marinelli and his vigilanct attitude.   I don’t relish his being placed under near constant scrutiny, especially when the Lions so often find the means to ignite the flames of criticism within the third estate.   That being said, Marinelli often reminds me of a military spokesperson, who rather than being honest and forthright, couches their responses in verbiage, and utilizes semantics to completely skirt the line of questioning.

After hearing all week about how the Lions difficulties while playing in Washington were completely unconnected with the current roster, I am very disappointed that the Lions were so clearly outcoached, outplayed, and out-schemed.   Marinelli, being the head coach, should be willing to stand accountable to his team’s failings, as opposed to engaging in evasive debates which only seem to further cloud the direction of the continually moribund Lions franchise.

The Lions are entering their bye week.   This press conference would have been an excellent opportunity for Coach Marinelli to point out the things that the team will address in the two weeks leading to their home game against Tampa Bay, rather than continue to damage his flagging reputation as a head coach.

  1. Marinelli’s was the tirade of a lifelong position
    coach(remember,he’d NEVER been a co-ordinator) who
hit the jackpot at 56,and thinks he has a reason
to take himself too seriously. For my money, the Martz
situation is going to blow up in the Lions’ faces,
with some club forgetting that, save for making Super
Bowl 34,he’s a vastly overrated head coach and hi-
ring him,or his prima donna attitiude causing dis-
sension amongst him and the other,less-privileged
assisstants, and finally Martz and the players.

  2. Martz gives a lot more fodder for discussion, that’s for certain. I like the Lions coaching staff and dissension can be healthy, along it doesn’t take them from their focus of the importance of their jobs at hand.

I also believe the colossal ass-whupping they received certainly contributes to the in-fighting. At this time, the coaching staff still appears unified.

Martz needs to do a better job, in spite of his eccentricities, he is one of the league’s best offensive minds. The Lions future success certainly rides with outscoring it’s opponents, not winning squeakers with field position, special teams, and an effective defense. That magnifies Martz’s importance.

Martz supporters would tell you a better O-line performance will clear all of this up. It is imperative that Jeff Backus and George Foster play better, or be replaced.
