“Killer” Kowalski Confirms My Suspicions
December 4, 2007 on 2:52 pm | In Uncategorized |Tom “Killer” Kowalski wrote an excellent article today speculating upon the long term future of Roy Williams and Kevin Jones in Detroit. Each have clear reasons why they would like to leave Detroit, and honestly, who can blame them?
You only get one opportunity to make your mark as an NFL player, and who wants to waste their valuable, admittedly heavily compensated, talent floundering for this abortion of a franchise? Are there discernible signs that things are going to change before each player becomes a free agent in ‘09?
Given how badly Matt Millen’s last two “franchise” players (Cory Redding and Jeff Backus) have performed after receiving big raises and shedding the “franchise” tag, I hope that the Lions can trade one or both of them, before they each get the opportunity to flop as miserably as the aforementioned players.
I really like Kevin Jones and Roy Williams and appreciate their contributions. Still it has become grossly apparent that neither have the right mix of ability, leadership, and luck, considering their injury histories, to seriously alter the course of this franchise. I hate to admit it kids, but the interminable rebuilding project continues to march on…….

Blog-Inator,
I couldn’t help but notice the use of the dispicable term - abortion. Good analogy. See, both forms are allowed and accepted by this sick world. Both should, however; be illegal. The R v. W version is incomprehensible sickening. But some would argue (weakly, I might add) that it’s the woman’s choice. Yeah, kinda like Tommy Silverstein’s choice to murder Officer Clutts, I guess. Stupid! Now…the Lions…yeah…an abortion of a fran-cheeze. Mediocrity seems, as I was afraid would become even more evident, to be the POD (sorry…military speak for Plan of the Day). Suck it Millen!

Hey I just wanted to tell you that your blog is great. I’ve been reading it for years, and love it. Thanks for your dedication to writing it, despite the fact that the Lions have never given you a reason to

When they hired Marinelli, I thought that Millen had finally figured it out. He hired a coach who had the right philosophy: “it all start in the trenches”, “you have to win the battle of the trenches”, “pound the rock”, “you have to run the ball and be able to stop the run”. Finally an old school coach praising old school football. We’re gonna draft big old linemen, on offense and defense. We’re gonna have an old fashion offense. We’re gonna run the ball and stop the run. Marinelli was saying that he wanted his team to resemble the city, the people of Detroit. Hard working, blue collar, etc…
And then the draft another receiver in the first round. I wanted Joe Thomas. I wanted a big middle linebacker.
Then we start hearing about the Lions being a pass-first offense. What is wrong with this picture. They have a 300-pounds fullback, who is probably the only smart decision Martz has made so far. But they don’t use him. T.J. Duckett who came in to camp in great shape, with a great attitude, who obviously was again commited to football; and we use him sparingly.
I have always wanted the Lions to be like what the Vikings are today. A team that can run and stop the run. A big physical team.
Not a pass first team. Not a team with small linebackers. Not a team with small defensive ends. Not a team that have no use for tight ends or fullbacks. Not a team that always decide to pass on 3rd and 2.
I’ve never been to Detroit. I live in Montreal. But I dont think that the Lions reflect the people of Detroit. I think they would be a great fit for the CFL though, a pass-happy sissy flag football league!
Like the old man from Texas that ran into Cory Redding this offseason, I think I’m finally about to get a divorce from this uninspired, no-personnality team.
Go Vikings from now on!

Excellent comments by all. Thanks GVSU for reading in spite of the Lions considerable failings.
Sleeman thanks for supporting my poor choice of words. I don’t want anybody to think that I take abortion lightly, but by refraining from use of four letter words I couldn’t find an effective means to disparage this franchise with enough venom.
Simon–excellent. That Mouse Davis/June Jones stuff was never popular here and without Barry Sanders, it makes the arena-style game even more problematic.
Does that mean that Henry Burris or Damon Allen should be signed to back up Kitna, by the way?

Mike McMahon is with Montreal now. He started with the Toronto Argonauts. They tried him for one game and he was pathetic.
I think the NFL is obviously way better than the CFL, but I dont understand why some NFL stars can’t do much in the CFL, and yet some of the CFL stars can’t crack any of the NFL rosters.
Doug Flutie was the best CFL QB that I had ever seen, so he managed it. But I think that the Lions should’ve taken a serious look at Casey Printers. He was 3rd string with the KC Chiefs but never got a chance to play.

The way the QB’s are utilized and what they are asked to do are completely different. I believe the Lions had an interest in Printers but KC got him first.
I am surprised that the CFL doesn’t import more athletes over though. The XFL, Arena League, and NFL Europa have all fed the league with talent but the CFL has sent fewer players in recent years.
I believe that with the impending growth of pro football leagues on the horizon, and the absence of NFL Europa, you will see more players acquired from Canada, much like how Europe and the Far East have had an impact in sports like hockey, basketball, and baseball. Plus the quickest way for the NFL to internationalize it’s product and brand would be to feature stars from far flung regions.

I have just ordered by first Packer clothing. I have been watching/following the Lions since 1958. Saw Bobby Layne and Hopalong Cassidy play the Colts at Tiger Stadium. We won. Now, it’s not “we” anymore.
I have had it. No mas, no mas.
Let’s go Packers.

Wow!! Dobie–let me talk you from the ledge. As pathetic as the Lions are, and can be, you don’t have to go committing an immoral act of such enormous magnitude. I hope you decide to recant and burn that Packers gear.
