Who the Hell is Cedric Saunders?
September 24, 2008 on 4:25 pm | In Uncategorized |The Ford’s, more importantly, William Clay Ford, Sr. has made some official announcements in regard to the Lions front office shake-up today, i.e. the scab which ultimately needed to be picked:
Tom Lewand is in charge of the financial/business aspect of their operation, Martin Mayhew will assume the role of general manager (he was the assistant general manager and senior vice president ), and Cedric Saunders will be the vice president of football operations. All will answer directly to William Clay Ford, Sr. in regard to team decisions that need to be made.
Who is Cedric Saunders , you ask? I don’t know, either. Apparently, you guessed it, he has freakin’ Tampa Bay connections. His bio says that he works closely with Marinelli, too. I wonder if Marinelli won some sort of power play with Millen, at some point. No matter, will you relent and break out the “creamsicle” jerseys as alternates please, Mr. Ford!?!
Are the Ford’s actually assembling an interim staff, which may ultimately shift into a “permanent” staff? Is there going to be an internal power play between Saunders and Mayhew, both likely interested candidates in the position.
Buckle your seat belts, you are due to hear about 3-6 months of this kind of speculation, the Ford’s final decision will take some time. Ford assures us that there will be a thorough search, and these positions are effective ONLY through the rest of the current season.
By the way, Lions fans are truly crazy. According to the Oakland Press’ David Birkett, the Lions Allen Park headquarters has been “surreal” and that a ” parade of fans have been driving by all morning honking their horns and waving Lions flags as if they have been liberated”.
Here is a brief, off-hand list of candidates (from various sources)
1. Ron Wolf ex-Packers GM/championship architect
2. Floyd Reese ex-Titans GM
3. Bill Cowher “Coach Jaw”/spitter
4. Jimmy Johnson “Is it a rug, or not, Jimmy?”
5. Tom Heckert Michigan ties/Eagles exec
6. Nick Caserio Patriots exec
7. Martin Mayhew see Lions website
8. Kevin Colbert Steelers

I certainly hope they branch out. One of my theories regarding any organization of any kind is “organizational inbreeding.” There has to be a change of personnel to allow the growth and expansion of thought. Promoting from within will put the nails into the coffin that Millen has created. The entire level of discourse which goes on behind the scenes needs to change. Otherwise we will see the same tired routines. Somebody has to come in and introduce some sort of innovation into this organization.

It will forever remembered that September 24 was a dark day for Detroit’s Mustached American population. As Lions President Matt Millen was ushered out, Tigers reliever Todd Jones announced his retirement effective at the end of this disappointing season.
And for Mustached Americans in Detroit and elsewhere, we must ask ourselves: What will be the next shoe to drop?
Indeed, will Tigers manager Jim Leyland and his lip sweater walk at season’s end? Will we learn that the mustaches worn Jack Morris, Lance Parrish, Dan Petry, Kurt Gibson, Chet Lemon, Willie Hernandez and others during the 1984 Tigers championship season were fake? Will James Edwards’ mustache fail to gain enough votes to garner entry into the Basketball Hall of Fame?
Yes, Tom Selleck is still on television - albeit not sporting his Tigers hat from “Magnum P.I.” But it is rare, outside of a mug shot, that popular media places a Mustached American on the front page of a newspaper or on television in a flattering light.
Sport, however, is the exception. In sports we have heroes such as Leylands, Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley, Larry Birds, Lanny McDonald, and more.
We at the American Mustache Institute, the ACLU of the Mustached American people, hope that one day we can live in a world where all men and women, are in fact, treated equally. But until that time comes, we will continue to battle the negative stereotyping that has accompanied the Mustached American since our cultural heyday in the 1970s.
So farewell to Millen and Jones. At least for some of us, they represented something bigger than the Lions or the Tigers. They represented the hopes and dreams of Mustached Americans everywhere.

I would also like to see them totally start from scratch with the new front office. Tom Lewand and Martin Mayhew are not the answers. Lewand has no football experience and Mayhew was involved in the personnel side during this whole fiasco, and in case no one has noticed this team is seriously lacking talent. If you morphed this team with any of the successful teams in the NFL we have 2 players that might be starters Johnson and Sims) thats it. Go outside the organization and bring in someone with the reputation
of a winner
Also, am I the only one sick and tired of the ongoing annoyance that is Roy Williams. Here’s an idea for ya Roy, shut your f*(%ing mouth and catch the damned football. We’ve already seen you kill several drives early in each game with key drops. New Rule- you can start talking when you start producing.

PBR300-I am in agreement about Williams. I think it could happen, even if Mayhew has downplayed that potentiality.
I agree with the clean sweep theory. Every last vestige of the old regime needs to be removed.
Abraham Froman–if that’s who you really are, I have enough beard and mustache to compensate for the hit Detroit has recently taken in the facial hair department.

NEW TORNADO POLICY for the Detroit and nearby areas-
In case of possible tornadoes sweeping through the Metro Detroit
area, we ask that all residents take shelter at Ford Field.
We are certain that a touchdown will not occur there.
Thank you for your cooperation,
