Furrey to IR, Lions Sign WR Keary Colbert, Ten Days of Peace?
December 1, 2008 on 3:15 pm | In Uncategorized |Lions WR Mike Furrey will miss the remainder of the season due to the lingering effects of a concussion suffered in the Jacksonville Jaguars game. The Lions have signed journeymen ex-USC WR Keary Colbert to replace Furrey on the roster.
Lions QB Daunte Culpepper has been no great shakes, but the idea of Calvin Johnson and Shaun McDonald joined by players like Colbert, John Standeford, and Adam Jennings, generates far less “daunting” prospects for Lions opponents than when the Lions roster was seemingly replete with wideout depth earlier in the season.
The Lions (mercifully) will have had 10 days off when it plays the Minnesota Vikings at home this Sunday. In most cases, I would suggest this layoff would enhance their potential for them gaining a victory, especially since the Vikings were the last team to be defeated by an 0-12 Lions team.
That being said, the Vikings appear to be peaking at the right time. Even without the “Williams Brothers” in their middle of their defense, should Pat and Kevin eventually be suspended, I still don’t like the sum total of the Lions chances for finding victory.
By the way, the Detroit News has done it again. Lynn Henning has written two excellent articles about the Lions front office search and the team’s failure to draft and develop a franchise QB. Both are must reads!

Okay, so barring a miracle they have first pick and who should they choose?

Smiling Dog–Who would you suggest they take? The early consensus is, if he chooses to enter the NFL Draft, is Georgia QB Matthew Stafford.
Personally, as a Lions fan, the sheer thought makes me recoil in fear and triggers convulsions that feature wonderful side effects like vomiting and diarrhea.
Stafford has the look and ability of a NFL QB, but one has to ask, what exactly has he accomplished during his time in Athens?
With the incredible cap expenditure that is involved with picking in the top 5, and the clear and obvious fact that the Lions need to draft players who can contribute immediately, I would support a Left Offensive Tackle, Corner, or Defensive End.
More Specifically, Alabama’s Andre Smith, Ole Miss’ Michael Oher, Virginia’s Eugene Monroe, Georgia Tech’s Michael Johnson, or Ohio State’s Malcolm Jenkins. You might ask, what have these players proven?
My response is, considering the Lions propensity for draft faux pas, these are players who could help put the Lions into a future position where they may consider selecting a franchise QB. The Lions don’t have the supporting players in place for a player like Stafford to thrive, in my opinion.

Michael Ohr has recently been taking some hits to his “desire” level. Folks are starting to say he is too inconsistent, takes plays off, and sometimes gets beat by people that have no business beating him. I am so excited and at the same time scared for the 09 draft. It will b e interesting or sure.
