Well, Today’s Decisions Were Far From Surprising…
December 29, 2008 on 3:34 pm | In Uncategorized |The decision to terminate Rod Marinelli and most of his staff after an 0-16 record comes as no surprise.
The real shock, facing the opportunity for a genuine and substantial change, William Clay Ford has chosen to stay the course, by promoting Tom Lewand and Martin Mayhew.
Even with Ford’s predilection towards retaining incompetent lackeys over the years, today’s decision takes the cake.
Rather than address the reality of the Lions 0-16 season, and feel the weight of it’s improbable force, Ford has decided to stick his head in the sand.
For the last time, Roger Goodell, I implore you, use your influence and power to install an NFL czar within the Lions organization. It is clear that the failed ownership of this once proud franchise is only willing to continue to provide itself with the noose in which it can hang itself with. Harrumph!!!

Let me add another “harrumph” to this. I cannot believe that they would start the offseason by foreclosing on any possibilities. What is wrong with keeping options open? Mayhew and Lewand may be a pair of stand up guys, but I’m going to guess that there are other individuals worth looking at to run this organization. If my theory of organizational inbreeding is correct, then this will only get worse. What are the possibilities? Do you see any light at the end of the tunnel? Could we be conceivably vying for the number 1 pick in the 2010 draft? We did 0-16, why not 0-32? Again, harrumph!

On Sirius radio it was reported that the Lions have asked permission of the Giants to speak to their D coordinator. While I love the NYG defense, I can hardly think of a good reason why any sought after coach would take the Lions job when they know they will have to work for a documented failure in Martin Mayhew. Also, who was the idiot that named Colletto O Line coach? I need to know. The O Line has sucked for years and we are standing pat? Losers. They are a joke and they make our support of them laughable. What they do not understand is that people are born into supporting a Team. It’s hometon pride. By going with proven losers, they are pissing on me and my kids.

Wow–pissing on you and your kids . . . so very harsh . . . yet so seemingly true. It comes off as a kick in the mouth of someone (like you and I) who have spent so much time, energy, and money supporting this team. I don’t know how Colletto is with the O-line–somebody on talk radio said that he did have knowledge–but then look at how well our line has performed (especially as to issues regarding discipline and the seemingly impossible task of remembering the count). On the bright side . . . well, I don’t see a bright side.

The farcical nature of the Lions existence astounds me! The Colletto non-termination tells me that Brian Billick is a candidate for the job, they worked together in Baltimore.
I also think that the Lions likely gave Marinelli an ultimatum, you can stay but your Tampa cadre–Joe Barry, Mike Barry, and Jimmy Lake (and oh, don’t forget the “Mr. Naked Drive Thru” Joe Cullen)–had to all go. Marinelli chose to fall on the sword, probably a mercy kill on his part.
I also expect Marty Schottenheimer (Redskins) to emerge as a candidate due to prior associations with Mayhew. I expect that Mayhew will want to consider coaches that he developed a rapport with throughout his career.
Mike–you are about Spagnuolo, why would he go to the Lions, whose defense would need a complete overhaul, again, in order to better utilize his blitz and pass rush-heavy schemes. I don’t think any legitimate coordinator candidate with a future will consider the Lions.
It will be either longshots (ala Marinelli/Mornihnweg) or retreads (the aforementioned Mssr.’s Billick and Schottenheimer) for the Lions.
Why would any candidate with a real future want to detonate their prospective careers with a stop in the “D”…
