Schwartz’s Interview With Mike Reiss
February 16, 2009 on 3:45 pm | In Uncategorized |Alright Lions fans, take a deep breath, and grab a seat. You are about to read some of the smartest, shrewdest comments made by anyone recently connected with the Lions organization (and possibly ever).
In a recent talk with the Boston Globe’s Mike Reiss , Schwartz provides music to the average Lions fan’s ears:
“We don’t plan on being the ‘Greatest Show on Turf’; we’re going to be a big, physical team that can run the ball and stop the run.”
Schwartz further states:
“We need to be built to have to go up to Lambeau Field in late December and win a game. We have to be built to go into Soldier Field and win a game in December or January that could mean the division. The best way to do that when the weather gets bad and the wind gets blowing-you have to be able to run the ball and stop the run.”
“The one lesson I learned from Bill Belichick and Jeff Fisher is that if you can run the ball and stop the run-if you’re strong up front on the offensive and defensive line-you’ll be consistent from week to week.”
Preach on brother Jim. Now, obviously the real challenge is to get the Lions mismatched bunch of castoff’s, “never-were’s”, and any new additions that they may include this off-season to actually stop the run and allow the team to consistently run with the ball.
Still, at least taken upon face value, do these comments sound like ones coming from someone who will be willing to allow the organization to take a chance on a talented, but inexperienced and erratic young quarterback? “The Schwartz” may be the only reliable entity currently operating within the ivory towers of Lions headquarters. This my friends, for now, is good news.

I saw Schwartz’s interview during the Wings’ game last night. Oddly enough, a Lion shows up and the Wings lose. Anyway, I really like what he has to say, but just how long before he sheds the youthful appearance and gets that familiar “pained” expression that all Lions coaches seem to have.

I love this talk although it probably couldn’t come at a worse time. If they are indeed playing poker with the draft, all the other teams are going to be pretty comfy with us taking an OL at #1 (I hope)

Yukon, he has to EARN that thousand yard stare, that you have grown to love. I would assume, and it is only an assumption, that the beginning of that ulcerous expression would be after Matthew Stafford has thrown his third interception of the game during week 7…

Mike, you are right, but this, among other comments, will be part of the stream that are quoted between now and draft day. Furthermore, I couldn’t give a rat’s ass if the Lions make it known that are going to take a linemen or linebacker, I am skeptical that any team would honestly consider trading up anyhow. Your concern is correct, but this is the one time that I hope the Lions get it right, even if it means declaring their intentions openly.

Steve, I totally agree. If we get a good guy, I don’t care where we pick or where the pick comes from. As far as I’m concerned they could take Malaluaga (sp) 1st and if he is the stud everyone says who cares if a linebacker goes #1. We haven’t had a true defensive leader in the middle for years.

Hey Steve,
Couldn’t find an email address to contact you at so I thought I’d just leave a comment.
My name’s Jeff Little and I’ve got the newest Lions blog on the block, The Church of Schwartz.(http://churchofschwartz.com) Previous to that, I’d been running SportsOpinion.ca for the last couple years. The Lions have always been my passion though and now I’m pursuing that. The reason I’m writing you is that I’m trying to put together a group of the most popular and prolific Lions bloggers. I’d like to run a weekly series where I ask three burning questions and then post the answers from each blogger.
The way it’ll work is that I’ll email the questions out to the interested bloggers every Monday. Each question will only require a short response, no need to write novels. I’ll give you a few days to answer the questions and then post the answers either Wednesday or Thursday morning. In every article, there’ll be multiple links to your blog, as well as the latest article on your blog. You’re free to re-post the content on your blog also.
I hope you’ll be interested in this offer and I eagerly await your response.
Thanks,
Jeff (Reverend Spielman)
