Larry Foote, Travis LaBoy, Kevin Carter, and Drew Henson
April 29, 2009 on 6:47 am | In Uncategorized |The post-draft free agent mercantile has officially opened for business. After doling out big contracts to newly-drafted rookies, or in order to create the available space to do so, teams will routinely release veterans either whom they are no longer able to afford, or were unable to trade for a reasonable offer prior or during the draft.
The Lions met with veteran ex-Rams and Titans DE Kevin Carter yesterday. There have been a growing number of reports connecting the Lions with former Michigan, Detroit Pershing and Steelers LB Larry Foote, too.
Foote would be a major problem solver for the Lions. He would also be the rare free agent who turns to the Lions because he would genuinely enjoy playing on the team, rather than for completely Machiavellian purposes.
I would not be surprised if the Lions talked to recently released DE Travis LaBoy, due to his having played for Jim Schwartz in Tennessee, and they are likely still in the market for a veteran QB, who would be an additional training camp body, if nothing else.
The Lions released QB Drew Henson, who indicates that he would like to remain playing, but it would seem that his chances as a designated clipboard holder are likely drawing to a close.
So briefly, at least, the Lions will still be “kicking some tires” and addressing their personnel needs, or putting some contingencies in place, in preparation for players inevitably going down to injury.
If the Lions are able to add an O-lineman, D-lineman, or Middle linebacker in the second stage of free agency, their draft will appear much more sensible, in my eyes.

What is the story with the free agent rookie QB from Michigan? Are they hoping he will turn into their 3rd guy?

I think that he is the proverbial training camp arm, and at this point, he’s fighting for that opportunity.
He has a big frame and stranger things have happened. If he outplays Stafford, the Lions have got problems…

It would be embarrassing, but it’s not like there isn’t presedence(sp), just maybe not on the same team. Lots of high #1’s are a bust (Joey etc.) and several undrafted guys have won a starting job. I think its still a million to one shot that he would be better than stafford, but hopefuly if he were to be better, the schwartz will have the courage to play him. hitting dudes while in shorts and a t-shirt is far different than an actual game. Stafford has ALL the pressure, he has none.

The other thing with Goltz is that he is (relatively speaking) a tabula rasa, which unfortunately for a player like Drew Stanton, gives the Lions some room for projection.
Stanton has probably deserved better than he has received with the Lions, maybe greener pastures await elsewhere still?
The Lions are still very likely to add another veteran backup to the competition, too. Maybe giving Stafford two people to compete with (rather than just one) for playing time can buy the Lions a little bit of developmental time and provide Stafford with even more impetus to become a quick study, so that he can deservedly get onto the field, rather than out of necessity.
